The Greatest Asset of Your Restaurant

Updated: Jun 19

Why should you spend more time with your staff?

It's because they matter! Aside from money, one of the hardest parts about being in the restaurant industry is your people, and managing them effectively.

As restaurant owners and managers, we spend 98% of our time thinking about our people since we have already survived the money part.

People come and go, some of them quit, and some of them stay. We must know what is going on in their lives.

How can you be of help in whatever that they are dealing with so they will serve your customers better?

Some may be going through a rough season in life and their performance in the workplace becomes affected, it goes up and goes down.

But one thing remains true, and that is we need them. We need our people, and we can't do business without their help.

Our people play an indispensable role in our success, and so we must always find ways of keeping them in our company, especially the good ones.

Their success is our success, and their failures are our failures.

This only justifies why they should be taking a lot of our time, especially if you want to do this business well.

It is critical that when you glance at your calendar and you look at your week, you must have blocks of time dedicated to your people.

You must be constantly hiring employees, regularly documenting their performances, and sadly, continually firing people.

So how can we focus on our people and make them feel that they do matter to us and they play a big part in our company?

Here are two valuable tips that I can share with you that worked well with our company:

1. Communication is the key

We need an enormous amount of time to always interact with our people.

We must be committed to meeting our staff regularly, talking to them one-on-one or sitting down with the two or three of them to communicate intensively.

Communicating with our staff all the time should be our goal.

Setting a regular meeting with them, reviewing their performance week after week, and documenting how things are going exactly.

2. Training is vital

Training your people should be one of your obsessions.

Training how are you going to take them to the next level every single week must always be on top of your to-do list.

One of the best things in our company is that we are passionate about having a strategic training system and we guarantee that everybody gets some sort of training every week.

We have created training videos that they can watch unlimited.

It doesn't matter how long the staff has been working in our restaurant, everybody must keep up with the training to ensure that no one is left behind.

Having a restaurant that thrives without you being physically working on the operational side of it because you have the people in place who know exactly what they need to do.

This could be one of the best things that every owner envisions to happen in their restaurant.

And this can be possible when you focus on your people so that they will perform well and contribute to the success of your company.

As they say, the greatest asset of a company is its people. Never have second thoughts of investing in them.

Invest in having meetings with your people regularly to keep them motivated to go to work and conducting training to continuously develop their skills. Spend on your people now and get good results eventually.
